It’s been almost two years since Premier Su Tseng-chang took office in January 2019. Su has been in the spotlight over the past few weeks, as rumor has it there could be a Cabinet reshuffle. It is generally believed that the public is not happy with the government’s handling of the issue of imported US pork containing the additive ractopamine, and its decision not to renew the license of TV station Cti News.
A survey released by an e-newsletter called Formosa in late November showed that 59.4% said the disadvantages outweigh advantages when it comes to lifting the ban on US pork imports, which goes into effect in January. As for the controversy over Cti News’ license renewal application, 47.8% said the denial of the station’s license renewal amounted to political intervention. That’s despite the government’s arguments that the application was reviewed by the National Communications Commission, an independent organization.
Formosa is considered to favor President Tsai’s DPP, as it was founded by Hsu Hsing-liang, a veteran DPP member, in December 2009.
