The title track, “Fold,” begins with a single drone that is quickly seized by a tight rhythmic undercurrent, which serves as the vessel drawing listeners downstream. At the mouth of this sonic estuary, a minimal and evolving melody appears triggering a gradual increase in energy. As the energy builds, a series of auxiliary sounds fly in and out of view before the entire track descends into an ambient interlude. A stream of bright stabs drives the track higher, eventually dropping the listener back into the groove alongside a subterranean bass line. The track culminates with the radiant glow of bells that eventually disappear leaving nothing more than the whispering decay of reverb tails.
In contrast, “MRY2” is darker and rife with complex sound design. These qualities are especially apparent in the opening moments of the track, in which coarse chunks of sound buzz wildly across the stereo field. “There are homegrown sounds all over this track,” explains Macionis regarding the sound design. “In fact, the rhythm was built around a recording of my washing machine.” His commitment to looking outside of the box for inspiration even motivated the name of the track. “I named the track after a specific memory slot on the Korg Volca Beats that stored the drum programming for the groove.”
Plaid contributes a remix of the title track to the EP, transporting the music into uncharted territory by way of the towering melodies and glitch beats that the duo is known for. Beginning with a single note from the original melody, the track takes off in a new direction. The groove is replaced by pointillistic patterns of synthesized drums, and a series of melodies shimmer overtop of a new harmonic progression. At times mysterious and cinematic, the music makes the listener feel as though they have fallen down a rabbit hole and wound up in some illusory wonderland.
