BONUS EPISODE - Dan and Danger Mark rummage through a pile of old DVDs and dig up Premonition (Yogen), directed by Norio Tsuruta. Based on Jirō Tsunoda’s 1973 horror manga The Newspaper of Terror (Kyoufu Shinbun).
Premonition was released in 2004 as part of Takashige Ichise’s J-Horror Theater project, an anthology of standalone horror films from some of Japan’s best-known genre directors. The series also featured films by Takashi Shimizu, Hideo Nakata, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Masayuki Ochiai, and Hiroshi Takahashi, helping to showcase a new wave of Japanese horror following the international success of films such as Ring and Ju-On.
The film uses the manga’s central idea of a newspaper that predicts future tragedies as the foundation for a completely new screenplay, with the script undergoing around two years of revisions before filming began. Although Tsunoda was initially unhappy with how much the story differed from his manga, he reportedly changed his opinion after seeing the finished film.
Released as a double feature alongside Infection, Premonition combines supernatural horror with psychological drama, using its unsettling premise of a newspaper that foretells the future to explore grief, guilt, and the fear of being powerless to change fate. Although reviews were mixed upon release, the film remains a notable entry in the J-Horror boom of the early 2000s.
