While Jesus was on the earth, He explained that his purpose was to do the work of God. All that He did was based on what He saw his Father in Heaven doing. Also, He taught His disciples that one day He would leave and then it would be their job to continue the work He had been doing. They wouldn’t do it alone, they would have the Holy Spirit.
