Amos 4:1-13.
God confronts His people with the sin of self-centeredness. Israel had rejected God’s Word and thus rejected the God of the Word running after idols (Amos 2:4-6). And in Amos 4 the prophet makes clear that the idol of ‘self’ had become the God-replacement at the center of their worship. Either we will worship the Creator as a result of knowing His extravagant grace, or we will worship creation as neglecters of His grace. And what had become outwardly apparent in Amos’s day was that the people of God fell into the latter category. Because the sin of self-centeredness is ultimately self-worship, they had become worshippers of creation. Therefore they were not prepared to meet their God. In love, Amos calls God's people to the truth of this failure so they can be prepared. This is God's grace on display.
