It is time...in fact, it is far past time to change the paradigm of education. In this conversation that I share with Leah McDermott, founder of Bridge Academy, she talks about how the fullness of just living life offers a rich array of experiences that enlivens the soul and offers the individual the inspiration and courage to invent and create. That is the essence of humanity.
Have you ever wondered, why we send our kids to school? What does school offer that is imperative to learning and living? When, in your own life, have you used Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Calculus? Do humans only learn in institutional environments? Can you think of days where you and your child learned something new just by doing and being together? Certainly, in time spent with your child, you will have learned A LOT about your child. Connection. That is essentially ALL that matters in parenting; in living and all relationships.
According to John Taylor Gatto: Schools were designed by Horace Mann and Barnard Sears and Harper of the University of Chicago and Thorndyke of Columbia Teachers College and some other men to be instruments of the scientific management of a mass population. Schools are intended to produce through the application of formulae, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled. Is this what we want for our children? I'm thinking no.
Be a catalyst to change the paradigm for yourself, your child, your community and future generations. Let this conversation spark your journey. Leah McDermott is leading this change and lighting the path for those that "believed everything in the system was true...but now are seeing that it isn't" and want support in breaking free.
** The study and book she references in the interview is "Wounded by School" by Kirsten Olsen
