President Tsai Ing-wen says she wants to make it clear that the resumption of operations at the fourth nuclear power plant is definitely not an option, because this would be unsafe, costly and time-consuming. Tsai was speaking Wednesday at the ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s Central Standing Committee.

 

Tsai made the comments a day ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.  She said the Fukushima disaster not only has had an impact on Japan, but on Taiwan as well. That’s because anti-nuclear power views have become Taiwan’s mainstream opinion over the years. Tsai said that former President Ma Ying-jeou decided to mothball the fourth nuclear power plant in 2014 only after bowing to public pressure.
