Biopic Polishes a Pre Fame Portrait With a Prestige Cast
A new biopic promises a humble origin story for a Hollywood icon, conveniently wrapped in a prestige bow starring Toby Jones, Lesley Manville, and Harry Lawtey. Because nothing says gritty beginnings like a velvet rope of award-season favorites guarding the mythmaking.
AI Boom Gobbles Storage, HDDs Backordered, Cloud Pivots to QLC SSDs
Nearline enterprise hard drives are booked solid for roughly two years thanks to AI data center demand, so cloud providers are shifting to cheaper QLC NAND to skip the queue. First it was GPUs, then memory, now storage is the latest course at the AI buffet, with QLC endurance left to pick up the check.
FDNY Firefighter Patrick Brady Dies After Brooklyn Blaze
FDNY Firefighter Patrick Brady, 42, an 11-year veteran, died after suffering a medical episode while working the roof of a five-alarm apartment fire in Brooklyn. He was treated on scene and died at Brookdale University Hospital. A Queens resident from a multigenerational FDNY family, he is survived by his wife, Kara, and brothers Jimmy and Brian, both firefighters. He is the 1,163rd FDNY member to die in the line of duty. Funeral arrangements are pending and Ladder 120 will be draped in bunting Sunday.
Open Source Firmware Revives Google Nest Thermostats
After Google sunset its Nest Gen 1 and Gen 2 units, an enterprising developer released the No Longer Evil Thermostat, open-source firmware that strips out Google services, restores the discontinued hardware, and adds more precise heating control. Big Tech yanked the life support, the tinkerers rolled in with a defibrillator and better bedside manner.

The Video Game History Foundation uncovered text and 79 seconds of recorded but rejected booth banter from Midway’s gloriously chaotic MLB Slugfest. The lines were too wild for MLB, social posts racked up thousands of likes, and the library director says the voice actors simply improvised and went joyously off the rails. Consider it a time capsule from an arcade baseball series that loved beanballs, brawls, and physics that called in sick.
NHS Wales Sets New Net Zero Plan, ICU Team Delivers Real Gains
NHS Wales launched a refreshed Decarbonisation Strategic Delivery Plan to meet the legal Net Zero target by 2050. Hospitals have cut emissions from buildings and transport by nearly a quarter since 2018 to 2019, but supply chain emissions are rising, so the roadmap pushes energy efficiency and renewables, greener travel, tougher supplier standards, and less waste. Meanwhile, Cardiff and Vale’s Green ICU Team is doing the unfashionable part, results. They have cut plastic waste by about two tonnes a year, saved tens of thousands of pounds, and their Gloves Off campaign is on pace to eliminate roughly 490,000 non-sterile gloves and save £15,000 this year, alongside bottle recycling, safe tap water swaps, and LED lighting. Less slogan, more clinic, and the planet breathes a little easier.
