Pride and Prejudice - Chapters 35-36

Listen Later

As morning light pierces through the veil of dawn, Elizabeth, still reeling from the day before, seeks solace in a familiar walk. She unexpectedly encounters Mr. Darcy, but this encounter is unlike those from the past. He hands her a letter, dense with truths untold and a narrative that stands starkly against Elizabeth’s prior understanding of him.

Here the hidden veil is lifted off the character of Mr. Darcy, as he attempts to defend his honour against Elizabeth's accusations from their last encounter. From justifying his intervention in Mr. Bingley's attachment to Jane to revealing the true nature of Mr. Wickham, his words, penned with a mixture of pride and sincerity, start to crumble the stronghold of prejudice Elizabeth held against him. Will she reconsider her stance, or will her judgment stand firm?

The juxtaposition between her initial ardent denial of his words against Mr. Wickham to her acceptance of the difficult reality, paints a striking picture of a young woman grappling with the dissonance between perception and reality. As we delve into chapter 36, her introspection is profound as she realizes her grave miscalculations, confronting her prejudice and her ill-founded pride. She loses faith in her own discernment, regretful of her past decisions based on first impressions and biased judgments.
