The walls are completed, and the gates have been restored, and the enemy is flustered.

But a city is much more than walls, gates, and houses: a city is people.

In the first half of Nehemiah the people existed for the walls, but now the walls must exist for the people.

Rebuilding the wall is only the first step in removing the reproach from those who returned from exile.

The walls do not exist for their own sake.

Their significance depends on what is supposed to happening inside Jerusalem itself, the thriving community of God for the glory of God.
