Prioritize Your Personal Style with Jordan Stolch

Listen Later

Personal styling is everything that embodies the external representation of who we are. Not just what clothing we wear. It encapsulates their energy, their body language, the confidence you feel within your style.

Your personal style translates over video and photos. Which is why it’s so important to understand your personal style in your brand.

This doesn’t mean that you have to be wearing the latest “it” item, wearing designer clothing or chasing trends. What understanding your personal style means is that you are drawing in a community of people that relate to and understand who you are.

Prioritizing your style also helps you see a future version of yourself. Ask yourself: “Am I embodying the person that I want to be seen as? And am I doing that intentionally?”

Jordan shares more important questions to think on:

  • Are you choosing how you want to be seen as?
  • Is it in alignment with what you're trying to represent?
  • Do you feel like yourself in the way that you're being represented?

Authenticity is important with your personal style, so how do you reconcile being authentic and showing up as the best future version of yourself? Jordan says to think of your “Badass Alter Ego Self.”

If you haven’t quite figured out your personal styling yet, you can start off by thinking of what it would be like to embody that badass alter ego persona. If you had everything figured out, what does she look like? How does she present herself? How could I understand her? How is she dressing? What makes sense to her?

When you can separate the two - where you are now and where you want your future self to be, you can start to embody who you want to become while staying true and authentic to yourself.

Personal styling and personal branding is a transformative experience. If we want to be, do, have something different, then we have to do something different.

You can build confidence in your personal styling just by trying.

There are 3 key steps to get started.

  1. Determine your message. Think of personality and style adjectives. For example: “I want to be seen as approachable and relatable with some feminine infusion.” When you are building your personal style, always assess your decisions against these adjectives and ask yourself if they align.
  2. Build the visual. Create a visual representation of what style you are attracted to. Start with Pinterest and find out what you are drawn to. Pin more and more. When we see repetition, that’s when we know something is speaking to us.
  3. Recreate what you see and experience. Take the visuals that you’ve built and try to recreate it with what you own. See your clothes in new ways and see if it feels authentic. Do this with your own closet before you ever step into a store. When you experiment first, you’ll have a better idea of what you may need when you shop.

Styling is not superficial. It’s an extension of your body and who you are. Be an anthropologist to your own self and discover what lights you up and is authentic to yourself. This should feel very fun because there’s no wrong way to style yourself. You just need to start.
