Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is currently imprisoned in Iran, initiated a hunger strike on Monday in protest of the alleged denial of medical treatment by the prison authorities. A statement from her family, provided to CNN, confirmed this action. The 51-year-old activist was honored with the Nobel Prize on October 6 for her tireless efforts against the oppression of women in Iran, as well as her advocacy for human rights and freedom for all. However, this advocacy has come at a significant personal cost, as she has been sentenced to over 30 years in prison and is barred from seeing her husband and children. Mohammadi's family has reported that an Iranian prosecutor rejected her plea to be transferred from the infamous Evin Prison, where she is currently held, to a specialized heart and lung hospital for what they deemed as "urgent medical care."
