On Thursday, Oklahoma executed Jemaine Cannon, 51, by lethal injection at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. He was convicted of fatally stabbing 20-year-old Sharonda Clark with a butcher knife in 1995 after escaping from a prison work center. Cannon had been serving a 15-year sentence for a violent assault on another woman. His last-minute appeal, including a claim that he was Native American and not subject to Oklahoma jurisdiction, was denied by a federal appeals court. Cannon's execution proceeded despite his assertion of self-defense in killing Clark. The execution took place on the same day Alabama planned to execute James Barber for a different crime. Cannon's attorney criticized the decision to execute, while Clark's daughter and sister witnessed it, describing it as peaceful. Oklahoma had faced issues with its death chamber in the past, leading to a moratorium on executions.
