Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation with Joke Aladesanmi

Listen Later

In this discussion, Aladesanmi Joke, founder and executive director of the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR), discusses the challenges faced by Nigerians in prison.
Joke, a criminal defense attorney with over 11 years of experience, has been involved in providing support to incarcerated individuals and recognizing the rehabilitation gap in Nigeria.
With over 73,500 incarcerated individuals in Nigeria, over 70% are awaiting trials, leaving over 50,000 people in prison waiting to either be convicted or acquitted. Joke emphasizes that the consequences of incarceration are not limited to convicted individuals.
The prison population in Nigeria is overly congested, and leaving an offender in prison can have a significant impact on the nation as a whole. The consequences of incarceration are not

limited to convicted individuals.
Joke advocates for rehabilitation skills development for incarcerated
individuals, focusing on skills that can be a survival tool when they are out. She advocates for resources and opportunities to be on the ground for rehabilitation.

One of the programs they run for incarcerated individuals is their prison educational project, which provides education, teaching, and exam preparation.
