Privacy and cybersecurity should the Information Officer be doing, Priyanka Naidoo, ENS

Listen Later

Episode 6 brings our CyberRes security awareness series to an end. This episode looks at the data subjects security teams are protecting. Security solutions impact real people. Real users and real customers. Privacy is a real issue. Priyanka Naidoo offers a legal and human perspective as to why there should be attention paid to this important issue. Naidoo is really candid when she says “our data is already everywhere. Your digital footprint is large, but that doesn’t mean you cannot expect a reasonable use of your information.” And that’s where the discussion starts. “The beautiful thing about POPI is that it gives the data subject rights.” Says Naidoo, going further to explain that privacy extends to companies – South Africa being one of only 2 countries in the world respecting the privacy of companies and treating them as data subjects. The emphasis of security teams is heavily biased on the technology aspect as this keeps the criminals out. This discussion touches on the organizational operational measures which also need to be in place and Naidoo emphasis’s the team effort required to get security right across the board. Security and data privacy are not only requirements to safeguard the assets of the entity but to ensure the reputation of the company is not besmirched by privacy leaks. This discussion is pertinent especially in the midst of Cyber Awareness Month and CyberRes ensures that thinking of the full security spectrum is catered for. Enjoy the discussion and remember to leave comments in the section below.
