An environmental group called the Adirondack Land Trust has protected more than 2,000 acres of private land and waterways near the Whitney Wilderness Area.

The parcel in Long Lake won't be open to the public. But the new deal with a private landowner will block future development, protecting waterways that include a rare wild strain of brook trout.
