Process of Purity Pt. 1

Listen Later

Purity is a process, not a one-time event or a badge you earn. The image of a river makes this concrete: a river is most powerful when it has banks. Remove the banks and the water spreads into a swamp with no current and no clean flow. Spiritual constraints work the same way. The Word of God is the structure that makes a powerful life possible, and what is in the heart eventually comes out of the mouth where everyone around you can hear it.
Scripture is meant to read you, not just be read by you. Most people engage with the Bible selectively, reaching for comfort passages while avoiding the sections that address the areas actually needing work. Psalm 51:10 captures the right posture: David asked God to create in him a clean heart because he knew the work was beyond what he could manufacture himself. Sanctification, as laid out in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, extends beyond avoiding specific actions. It includes your surroundings. You do not have to participate in something directly to carry it home with you.
Purity also costs time. Giving God the time you would spend on something else, whether movies or golf, is how closeness with Him deepens. Fire purifies, and fire takes time. A generation that wants everything instantly runs into a real problem here, because spiritual depth is not available on a tight schedule. Holiness is not a hairstyle or a dress code. It is purity, and the Bible states plainly that without it no one will see the Lord.
