Climate scientist stresses urgency.
"Our climate is not safe now, so what does dangerous climate change mean?"
BZE radio talks to David Karoly
Professor of Atmospheric Science,
School of Earth Sciences: Melbourne University.
BZE Technology Radio Show: 16 Sep 2016: Podcast
Broadcast from Melbourne 3CR Radio
Karoly is internationally recognised as an expert in climate science and has been closely involved in the production of IPCC reports and is a member of the Climate Change Authority which was formed to provide INDEPENDENT advice to the Australian Government on mitigation initiatives. However the most recent report by the authority was considered inadequate by both David and Clive Hamilton (whose expertise is in the field of Economics, Ethics and climate to name a few and has written considerable books on climate and the present dangers) , which both experts consider was grossly unrepresented . The Federal Government had appointed 6 new members to the team yet only one scientist who could not be considered a climate scientist.
David has warned that Australia has only 1/3 chance to keep temperature limited to below 2 degrees as we have already passed the hope of 1.5 degrees (Paris agreement) due to a further increase in greenhouse gases and it takes perhaps a century to minimise warmth of the ocean. There is then need for dramatic changes in the hope of transitioning to a zero carbon economy e.g. Australia will have used 90% by 2030 which leaves only another 10% reduction by 2050! He calls Direct Action: Direct Inaction and believes some sort of market mechanism and increased targets are required and of course the opposition of the present government to Labor's ETS was amply politically motivated.
David mentioned the good news and bad news - the first the improved take-up of solar and wind (presumably initiated by public participation),and the slight decrease in the ozone "hole" and the second the threat of the closure of Macquarie Island, Australia's continual observation of weather for the last 50 years.
