Today Matua Wiremu Huta-Martin and Professor Taiarahia Black presents an interpretation, analysis and examination of the Waiata Matakite (prophet song) composed by the 19th century prophet Te Kooti Ārikirangi Te Tūruki. The interpretation provides a brief background to Te Kooti, his tribal connections and gives an explanation for the reason for this authoritative composition and the inspiration for it. The presenters also explain some of the biblical passages, words of revelation contained in this Waiata Matakite, making this waiata, although composed in 1887 still very relevant and compatible with today’s experience, knowledge and scholarship.
