Editorial Reviews:
Michael V. Smiths second novel, Progress, is a stirring tale of a woman, Helen, who, while still confronting the death of her fiancé, must face the impending destruction of her town due to the construction of an enormous dam. Meanwhile Helen must also cope with the surprise arrival of her long-absent brother Robbie and the secrets he has arrived to reveal. Cris Dukeharts compassionate performance compellingly relates the deep emotional struggles Helen must grapple with as she ponders the role of family and the value of honesty.

Stunning, powerful, heartwarming
From Canadian author Michael V. Smith comes this beautiful written book about complex family dynamics, lost loves and found ones, and the power of forgiveness to settle old scores. What seems at first like a quiet book about a spinster relocating from her family home at mid-life, surprises over and over again to build in drama and suspense. Like a magic cabinet with hidden compartments that reveal yet more hidden compartments, the book unfolds family secrets and betrayals until all is spread out on the ground -- quite literally, in the last few pages. There, by the light of the moon, the healing takes root. Not to be missed!
Movie material
This book should be made into a movie. It is intriguing from the beginning. Helen sees a man fall to his death on the first few pages and from there the story unfolds into so many underlying situations. You will notice that there are no quotation marks, so, I think, you feel and are much more sensitive to how Helen and Robert are feeling as they speak. There is a lot of emotion from each of the characters. The book is about 200+ pages and I couldn't put it down, wondering what would happen next.....and I cried when Robert and his sister had their falling out and he leaves their family home so upset. I truly enjoyed this book. I like to read books that make me think about it for days after I finished it. You can feel the sensitivity of this author on every page.
