Arduous reading

I found this book to be very laborious. If you are an academic you may well enjoy it, however for the rest of us mere mortals, it is a difficult read. The write up on it was what drew me to this book to start with, but upon starting the first chapter I knew I would not enjoy it. I slogged through the chapters until I could take it no longer and switched to a more relaxing read. I am certain that it was a great story, but it was not a great read.

With beautiful writing and sharp dialogue, the author lends authenticity to a suspenseful story which comes with a surprise ending.

If you like a bit of literature served up with your entertaining fiction, this is the book. Recommended.

Highest Praise

I read this book eight years ago, and profoundly admired it, but gave no thought to commenting on it publicly. Upon re-reading it, I am compelled to praise. As a tale about life in the war-torn Balkans, it stays tight to the truth of the place as I observed it during more than seven years there. It has action, suspense, drama, complex characters searching for people they are driven to find. It has loss, but also love. You can flit through this novel swiftly, but I wouldn't recommend doing so, and I don't think you'll want to. PV is a logolept's dream, words lovingly marched across the pages, connected in unusual and arresting ways to form razor-sharp insights. Hard to beat this one, in my opinion.

A War of Words - Fleishman's Novel of Jihad

Sometimes the fractals of my life lead to some interesting and unanticipated connections. One of my favorite haunts is the bar at Legal Seafood in Copley Place. If the folks at Legal relied on my consumption of alcohol to remain a profitable concern, they would have gone out of business long ago. I come for the clam chowder, the bottomless glass of Diet Coke and the world-class service from the great staff of men and women who make this bar a destination for many of us regulars. It beats Cheers for being a place where everybody truly knows your name. A few weeks ago, I took my usual place at the bar and quickly became aware that I was sitting next to two distinguished journalists: Kevin Cullen, columnist for the Boston Globe and Jeffrey Fleishman, Cairo Bureau Chief for the Los Angeles Times.
