As the sustainability planner for USF’s St. Petersburg campus, Winnie Mulamba is directly involved in efforts that support one of USF’s longstanding core commitments. In recent years, campus initiatives have included the installation of a biodigester to reduce food waste and a Tesla battery system to manage renewable solar energy, and student environmental groups have implemented a number of green projects. A new undertaking, the Fresh and Local Greenhouse Project, is expected to be up and running this fall. Fueled by a 2020 Ford College Community Challenge grant, the effort is designed to help address food inequality in South St. Petersburg, where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited. Winnie also shares her personal journey, which took her from Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi and the countryside of western Kenya, to USF, where she earned two master’s degrees in three years.
