It was the best experience of her life.  In this episode of "Props Clear," Windracers Fleet Manager Rebecca Toomey talks about her time in Antarctica with the ULTRA drone.

UK-based Windracers worked closely with the British Antarctic Survey flying the drone nearly 450 miles collecting data during the flight to help analyze environmental changes.  The ULTRA has a special autopilot system called Masterless, which reduces single points of failure.  One cool fact about the ULTRA--it's designed to fit in a 20-foot container.

Part of Toomey's job is ground control station operator, which involves planning and uploading the mission.  Toomey also talked about living at the Rothera Research Station, including being fed five times a day to keep warm, and getting lots of gear to withstand the conditions.

We're talking security in the sky with LandSkyAI.

Jillian Angeline talks with Jake Shild, CEO of the security company.  LandSkyAI offers a drone-in-a-box solution for security and surveillance needs.  The system can go airborne within 5 seconds when needed, and can be deployed up to 250 times in one day.

"When we're talking about drones and security, we're really focused on the automation of the systems and how we can actually get it so that almost like a virtual guard scenario where they could either augment the ability of the guards on site or they could save some shifts can't be covered.  Maybe it's night shifts," Shild tells Jillian.

Jillian also chats with Jake about future goals for the company, including improving communication systems with clients and integrating more of their own video analytics systems.  Just think of it like a personal airborne security system to improve peace of mind.

"It's safer and more efficient, which is rare to combine those two things, but that's what this new tech is doing, " said Bobby Carr, UAS Solutions Consultant with Valmont Industries.

In this week's "Props Clear" episode, Jillian talks with Bobby about his experiences in the field conducting miles of drone inspections of utility lines across the country.  The drones are outfitted with cameras to capture all components to check for rusted areas, missing pieces and any other issues.  This kind of work can save lives and prevent forest fires.  It's safer for the teams because they don't have to climb the poles.  Bobby said within the next few years, every company involved with utility lines will be using drones to inspect their infrastructure.

From helping wildland firefighters conduct prescribed burns and back burn operations, to controlling avalanches, Drone Amplified is finding ways to use unmanned systems to save lives and keep the supply chain moving.

Jillian Angeline speaks with Max Tubman, the Director of Integrations at the company.  You'll hear about the magic of dragon eggs, and how a chemical reaction in the drone helps the spheres catch on fire at the right moment to make firefighting efforts more efficient.  If you check out the video interview on Jillian's YouTube channel, you can watch the IGNIS drone-based aerial ignition system in action.

Max also talks about current testing of the new DART, a system dropping explosive payloads to trigger avalanches to prevent even bigger ones in the future.  DART stands for Drone Avalanche Reduction Technology.    "The reason why that's really important is if you can trigger the avalanche at the right time, you can prevent it from covering roads or covering a railroad." Max explained.  Team members have been traveling across the country testing the drone-based system.  Drone Amplified announced in February successful tests with Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities and Alaska Railroad Corporation.

Teamwork is key to Drone Amplified's success, and so is learning from every failure in the development process.  "If we're not failing, we're not really pushing ourselves hard enough either," Max said during the show.

A new addition to the drone industry this week!

American-owned-and-operated Anzu Robotics launched Wednesday, led by CEO Randall Warnas.

Just hours after the announcement of the Raptor with an RGB camera and Raptor T with thermal capabilities, Jillian Angeline sat down with Warnas to talk about the big impact from the compact, foldable drone.

Randall and Jillian discuss the larger geopolitical issues surrounding drones originating from China, and why Warnas feels he and Anzu are in the perfect spot to help solve the ongoing concerns.

LiDAR can show you the world in a whole new perspective.  Just ask Jeff Fagerman, CEO and Founder of LiDARUSA.

Jillian Angeline sits down with Jeff to talk about his journey with Light Detection and Ranging.  He says technology is so good these days, the machine can send up to 3 million laser pulses a second to the ground, mapping the world with coordinates.

"Take your paintbrush, a four-inch paintbrush and dip it in a bucket of paint, put it on a string and spin that bugger as fast as you can get.  If you did that in your living rooms, it's a disaster, right? Everything's covered.  And that's how LiDAR works," Jeff told Jillian.

Jeff is creative and resourceful, recounting how he and team members would visit Toys "R" US to get ideas for their LiDAR setups, going as far as buying toy cars, taking them apart and calling the manufacturer to get more information.

Jeff is all about family too, especially grateful for his wife's support.  His grandkids are even using drones to help herd sheep on their solar farm.  You'll hear about this, and so much more.  Thank you for listening!

For my latest “Props Clear” podcast episode, I had the honor of talking with Erin Roesler, Deputy Executive Director of the Northern Plains UAS Test Site.  She’s positive, innovative and seems to love a challenge.

The Northern Plains UAS Test Site in North Dakota is one of 7 in the nation.  The Northern Plains UAS Test Site doesn’t just wait for groups to come to them—they’ve operated in 17 different states!  Here’s a full list of the test site locations if you’re wondering:

Roesler and I talk about the creation of Vantis, a statewide UAS network which includes an operations center, integrated infrastructure, the data network, ground control stations, and aircraft.  This network supports BVLOS (Beyond-visual-light-of-sight) flights, which can be used for so many industries.  Think of it as a highway in the sky!

As one of the videos explains on Vantis’ website, it would make it possible for operators to “see all aviation vehicles, manned and unmanned, in one picture”.  What I also love is the part of the product can be built on existing infrastructure.

Roesler also shares why it’s important for UAS experts to have continued outreach with the traditional aviation community.
