Pros and Cons of Manual Website Accessibility Audits, Why ADA Course / DIY Option is Compelling

Listen Later

Kris Rivenburgh discusses the pros and cons of buying a manual website accessibility audit. The pros: an audit is thorough and necessary for full WCAG Conformance, in theory, you will know all issues, an audit is conducted manually by a technical expert, an audit results in formal, official documentation, and an audit is a one-time cost, at your discretion.

The cons are the high cost (usually $3,500 to start), no support is included, audits take 3-4 weeks to complete, audits are subject to human error which means issues can be missed, audit quality varies by service provider, the deliverable usually ends up as a long technical report and can overwhelm web team which means support needed, during the audit and remediation your web asset needs to be static, an audit doesn't do anything for fixing your website, remediation (the fixing of your website) is separate, takes months.
Also, very importantly, there is a disconnect between auditor and remediator which results in friction and loss of time and money.
This is, in part, why Kris recommends his ADA Compliance Course available at https://ADACompliance.net.

Kris designed the ADA Compliance Course (ACC) as instructions you can
give your team to fix the most commonly claimed issues in ADA website
lawsuits. The ACC is really an SOP for your web team.
