Pancreatic ductal carcinoma, a particularly deadly form of this dread cancer, emits a tell-tale enzymatic change that can help detect its presence earlier when it is more treatable.
Cancer biologists at the Oregon Health & Science University have developed a blood test, dubbed the PAC-MANN, that detects this form of pancreatic cancer with an 85% accuracy for early-stage cases. The test quantitates changes in protease activity that accompany development and progression of this cancer and is also useful for monitoring treatment effectiveness and cancer recurrences.
