My guest today is strength and conditioning coach Steve Collins.
Steve and I started our personal training careers at the same commercial gym in Angel, London, in 2010. Showing our age now.
Steve realised that working for a commercial gym isn't the best way to build a financially stable career. So, he hired a personal training studio in central London and started his own P.T. business.
He also accepted a job at Ultimate Performance, a globally recognised body fat transformation gym. UP has locations worldwide, and they've built a certain reputation in the industry.
Steve talks about his hunger to become a successful strength coach and the wrong turns he took as he grew his career in London.
After working crazy hours and feeling close to burnout, he decided to take a break and handed his clients over to his colleagues and holiday in Australia. He loved the mangos and avocados so much that he chose to stay in Australia and rebuild his training career from scratch.
He accepted a job at a gym in Perth, and it wasn't long before he was working crazy hours, getting out of bed at 4:15 am 5 days a week, and feeling burnout and depressed. Steve was stuck in his role and didn't have an escape route until his permanent residency was approved.
Steve left the gym and started working from his home garage gym as soon as he could.
In this episode, we cover a lot from the "work harder" fitness industry culture, burnout, depression, finding a sustainable career, and being in control.
I hope you enjoy this episoide.
Let's get stuck in.
