Protecting the covenant of marriage from spiritual warfare

Listen Later

In today’s world, too many marriages are falling apart due to spiritual warfare wreaking havoc on the relationships between husbands and wives.  I personally am walking through this tragedy and firmly believe the demise of my marriage is a direct result of Satan’s lies and deception taking hold in the heart and mind of my beloved, Darren.  Despite my current circumstances, I continue to pray for him daily and others like us who are losing the relationship they valued most because we were not equipped with the right weapons to fight a supernatural war.

The covenant of marriage is a sacred, public vow between a man, a woman and God designed to last a lifetime.

Once taken, this vow should serve as a “no exit strategy” for both the husband and wife so that they can love freely and deeply without fear of rejection or abandonment.  In too many instances, insecurities and false beliefs from a person’s past keep them from fully loving themselves and incapable of loving others.  This is one of the core reasons that the idea of divorce should be discussed and taken off the table well before the “I do’s” have been said.

Bibically speaking, God hates divorce and this fact is noted in the scriptures below, as well as many others:

  • Matthew 19:6 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (NIV)
  • Malachi 2:16 16 “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the LORD Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.
  • Hebrews 13:4 4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
  • Any covenant, in particular the covenant of marriage is a binding, weighty obligation. In Proverbs 20:25, we read, “It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows”(NIV).

“Marriage stands for the creation of unity among two people who were once separated in every way before love reached out and found the other—the way God reached out and found us, and covenanted with us, and loved us, and despite who we are, despite what we’re like, still loves us. This image, more than almost anything, is exactly what the enemy wants to denigrate.”  Priscilla Shirer, Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan to Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer
