Cloth masks absolutely are effective in slowing down the spread of COVID-19. But to protect against the hazards of smoke inhalation you need an N95.
If you're in an area in or near wildfire smoke, please be sure to check your Air Quality Index (AQI) daily. It can tell you how hazardous particular areas of your town are at a given time. Sometimes you can't smell the smoke, but the hazards are still there.
