New Life Through Nutrition, Chapter 3
by Dr Sheldon Deal 1974
Read for you by Kinesiologist Finola
Protein is the most basic constituent of the body. The words protein and protoplasm come from the Greek word proto, meaning first. The most elemental substance which still represents life is protoplasm. It has the properties of reproduction, expansion, contraction, serves as a nutrient, and sustains life. Blood plasma, the liquid part of blood after the cells are removed, can be lifesaving because of the protein it contains. Protein was isolated about 1894. Until that time there was a lot of guesswork going on about the body.
Protein falls into 2 categories albumin and globulin
Ideally 1 gram of protein per 2.2lbs of body weight daily
A complete protein contains all essential amino acids.
There have been 22 amino acids identified to date.
Protein is strictly for cell repair and cellular replacement.
Meat is the richest source of protein however also has the most waste material in it.
The standard of measure for amino acids is tryptophan, the most essential amino acid, to which a value of 1.0 is given
Ideal amino acid ratio:
Tryptophan 1 : Isoleucine 4 : Phenylalanine 3 : Methionine 4 : Leucine 34 : Valine 4
