Psalm 102:1-11
One day I phoned a friend of mine who’s in ministry and I said, “Well, how’s it going?” And his quiet reply was, “Well, I’m having one of those days.” Well, the next time you’re having “one of those days,” when everything seems to be going wrong, your plans are falling apart, you don’t feel good, there are problems and burdens, it seems like all of the borage of the enemy is against you; read Psalm 102. “Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto Thee. Hide not Thy face from me in the day when I am troubled.” What kind of a day was the psalmist having? Well, it was a day of trouble. In fact, he compares himself to a lonely bird. Verse 6, “I am like a pelican in the wilderness: I’m like an owl in the desert. [I’m like] a sparrow alone upon the house top.” He felt like a bird, weak and alone.
He picked out all the solitary birds here. The pelican, the owl; alone. The owl comes out in the darkness. That’s the way he felt. He felt like a bird alone up on the housetop. He’d like to go in the house and enjoy some fellowship but there he is alone up on the housetop. It was a day of trouble. “My days are like a shadow that declines; I’m withered like grass.” A day of trouble. But his day of trouble became a day of prayer. Verse 2, “Hide not Thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline Thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.” Now we can’t control circumstances around us. That’s very difficult for us to do. We can’t control people. He was having a day of reproach because the enemy was reproaching him.
Verse 8, “My enemies reproach me all the day;” So here he is with a day of trouble and a day of reproach and he says I’m going to change this by the grace of God and it becomes a day of prayer. He tells God just how he feels. He tells God just what he sees. He cries out to God and says, “God, you are the only one who can change this.” And you know, God does change it. He may not change the circumstances on the outside, but He does change our feelings on the inside. The day of trouble becomes a day of triumph.
