Psalm 103:6-12
We usually praise the Lord for something He has done for us and this is good. We ought to do that. Psalm 103, “Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me.” But today let’s be different. Let’s thank the Lord for something He has not done. Psalm 103 and verse 10, “He has not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” I rejoice when I read that. I’m glad that here is something God has not done. Now we know our own sins. Nobody has to tell us. We know our sins. Everyone knows the plague of his own heart. Not only the sins that we occasionally commit, but some of those sins that try to get us into bondage. There’s something in our lives that is just such a bond, such a battle. God knows all about it. We know all about it. God knows our sins better than we do. God sees the origin of our sins. He watches it.
God sees the outcome of our sins. One reason why God hates sin so much is because He is a holy God and He sees where sin leads. James tells us that lust when it conceives, produces sin; and then sin when it is full grown, produces death. (See James 1:15.) It’s a picture of an evil pregnancy. Sin is like a pregnancy. We bring that idea and that idea becomes a desire and that desire becomes a deed and then sin is born and the wages of sin is death. But God has not dealt with us after our sins.
On what basis does He deal with us? On the basis of the cross. The grace of God. The Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ died for our sins. God forgives our sins. Verse 3 of Psalm 103, “Who forgives all thine iniquities;” On the basis of the blood of Jesus Christ our sins have been forgiven. We can come to God and ask Him to forgive us. But the fact that God does not deal with us the way we deserve to be dealt with should not tempt us to tempt Him. Let’s not be fast and loose with sin. Let’s not try to tempt God. Let’s hate sin and let’s rejoice today that we’re walking with the Father on the basis of the cross of Jesus Christ.
