Psalm 104:1-4
Have you thought lately about the angels? We don’t usually think about the angels, do we, but we should! We don’t see them, we don’t hear them, but God’s Word tells us that they are there and Psalm 104 verse 4 tells us that they are God’s special messengers. “Who makes His angels spirits; His ministers a flaming fire:” Here we have a fire of God at work. The angels of God like the fire of God, out accomplishing the will of God. Well, the angels serve God, don’t they? They sang at creation. They came down and visited Abraham. They came to Hezekiah when Sennacherib was attacking Jerusalem and one angel destroyed 185,000 soldiers. When our Lord Jesus was here on earth, the angels were busy. They sang at His birth. They announced the coming of the Messiah. They were with Him in the wilderness when He was tempted. When He was in the garden, they were with Him and the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven and now the angels worship Him and they glorify Him.
Yes the angels serve God, but the angels also serve us. Oh this may sound like medieval superstition to some people, but it really isn’t! Hebrews 1:14 says “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to do service for those who are the heirs of salvation?” They are working for us. They are God’s invisible army, God’s servants working for us in this world. Now I don’t know exactly all that the angels want to do for us today. I have a feeling that when I get to heaven, I’m going to find out that there were many, many times when they protected us. I can think of times when we had been traveling and we got through and it didn’t look as though we were going to get through! I’m sure the angels were there. The angels strengthened the Lord Jesus Christ as He prayed in the garden. And I think there are times when the angels come and strengthen us.
Let’s rejoice today that we are not alone. “Greater are those who are with us than those who are against us” (paraphrase). We’re like the fellow in the Old Testament who had to have his eyes opened to see the flaming fire, the army of angels round about to protect him. (See 2 Kings 6:15-17.) The angels today are serving God, and they are serving us as we walk in the will of the Lord.
