Psalm 104:14-17
The people who wrote the Psalms were captivated by the God of creation. Of course the world they lived in perhaps was a little cleaner, a little purer, maybe a little more beautiful because man had not yet exploited God’s creation. One day the psalmist looked out and he wrote in Psalm 104 verses 14 and 15, “He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man, that he may bring forth food out of the earth, and wine that makes glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine and bread which strengthens man’s heart” (paraphrase). Food, wine, oil, bread. Now these are staples for the Jewish population back in that day. We must not think that because the psalmist talks about wine he’s talking about drunkenness.
The Bible certainly preaches against that kind of life. Rather what he’s saying here is that God supplies your every physical need. Not just your needs, but even above and beyond that. It’s what Paul talked about in 1 Timothy 6:17, “God, who gives us all things richly to enjoy.” “Wine that makes glad the heart of man.” In the Bible wine is a picture of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost when the people of God were rejoicing and worshiping and praising the Lord, the crowd said, “These men are full of new wine.” “Be not drunk with wine,” said Paul, “but be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Do you have the joy of the Spirit of God in your heart today? Oil. Oil is also a picture of the Holy Spirit. “Oil to make your face shine.” Moses had a shining face because he fellowshipped with God.
Stephen had a shining face because he was giving his life for God. Jesus had a shining face on the mount of transfiguration. The Holy Spirit makes the face to shine. Bread. To strengthen our heart. Bread is a picture of the Word of God. “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). God wants to give us gladness. God wants to give us radiance. God wants to give us strength. The Holy Spirit of God using the Word of God to make a child of God more like the Lord Jesus Christ.
