Psalms for Shepherds

Psalm 105 | Part 2: Psalms for Shepherds

Listen Later

Today, we're continuing in Psalm 105 with verses 16 to 25. Let's jump right in...

16 He called for a famine on the land of Canaan,

cutting off its food supply.

17 Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them —

Joseph, who was sold as a slave.

18 They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar.

19 Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the Lord tested Joseph’s character.

20 Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free;

the ruler of the nation opened his prison door.

21 Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household;

he became ruler over all the king’s possessions.

22 He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers.

23 Then Israel arrived in Egypt;

Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.

24 And the Lord multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies.

25 Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites,

and they plotted against the Lord’s servants.

This passage demonstrates God’s power and provision for His people and proves that whomever God uses greatly, He first tests thoroughly.

When we look at this through the life of Joseph, we see that God once again proves Himself trustworthy, both in the life of Joseph and the lives of his family — as well as with the future of what would become the Israelite nation.

That, dear fellow under-shepherd, is the God we serve today! The trustworthy, holy Almighty One Who often permits suffering, hardships, and difficulties in our lives to test us thoroughly, so that He might use us mightily.

We learn that much suffering brings much fruit and glory for the Father. And, in Joseph’s case, an example of God’s trustworthiness and sovereignty.

May you experience the same today, and may you live deeply into your calling as shepherd in the lives of those the Father has entrusted to your care.
