Psalm 108:1-13

“O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise.” That’s the way David begins Psalm 108 and he’s reminding us of the importance of a steadfast heart in the Christian life. “O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise.”

Well, what kind of a heart is a fixed heart? Well, it’s a heart, first of all, that is trusting in the Lord for salvation. The Lord Jesus Christ died for us on the cross. We have trusted Him, we have fixed our hearts upon Him, we have experienced His mercy. Verse 4 says, “For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reaches unto the clouds.” A fixed heart is a trusting heart. Jesus said you can’t serve two masters. You’re going love one, hate the other. Cleave to the one, despise the other. You can’t serve God and money or God and anything else. And so a fixed heart is a devoted heart, a loving heart, a heart that is devoted solely to the Lord.

In the Bible there are many pictures of the Christian life; marriage is one of them. When we trust Jesus Christ as our Savior, then we are married to the Lord Jesus. We’re just waiting for that day when the bridegroom will come and claim His bride, and we’ll enter into our heavenly home. Meanwhile, we want to be faithful to Him. We do not want to be guilty of spiritual adultery, being unfaithful to our Savior; a devoted heart.

A serving heart. You know, if your heart is fixed, you’re going to be busy serving others. Today, a heart fixed upon the Lord in faith and a heart fixed upon the Lord in love is going to be a heart that reaches out to serve others, to put others ahead of ourselves.

Finally, a fixed heart is a hopeful heart. We’re looking for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. When you love someone, when you trust someone, then you have the hope in the future, of enjoying that person in His presence. Today, is your heart fixed? Is it fixed on the Lord Jesus Christ in faith; in devoted love, in expectant hope? And is it reaching out to touch the lives of others to the glory of God?
