Psalm 109:1-13
What do you do when heaven is silent? What do you do when you’re crying out to God and somehow there is no answer, or at least you can’t hear it? Well, you do what David did. He kept on crying out to God, and he said, “Hold not thy peace, O God of my praise;” Psalm 109 verse 1. You see, David was being attacked by the wicked. So often that happened in David’s life, and you must remember that when he prays these prayers of judgement, this is not personal revenge on his part. No, he’s praying as God’s king. He’s praying as the king over Israel, God’s people. And from Israel, God’s Word and God’s Son would come. David wants to see the wicked judged because the wicked are attacking the people of God.
Well, why is God silent at times? Well, it may be that He’s silent because we aren’t listening or we don’t want to listen. Billy Sunday used to say that a sinner can’t find God for the same reason a criminal cannot find a policeman. He’s not looking! Sometimes there are things in our lives that are wrong and we don’t want to hear God’s voice! In fact, when our first parents heard the voice of God in the garden, they ran and hid. Sometimes children do that when they’ve disobeyed. Sometimes God is silent because we are not listening.
Sometimes He’s silent because we aren’t ready for the message. He wants to talk to us about something but we aren’t ready. We have to go through circumstances that make it easy for us to listen.
Sometimes God is silent because He knows we aren’t willing to obey. God is always ready to show us His will. But he only shows His will to those who really want to do it. Jesus said in John 7:17, “If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the doctrine.” An obedient heart always leads to open ears that hear the voice of God.
Or He may be testing us. Sometimes God is silent to teach us the importance of silence, the importance of waiting on the Lord. What shall we do? Remember His past blessings. Remember His faithfulness. Live on what He has already told you. Trust Him and wait. Before long you’ll hear the voice of God again.
