Psalm 109:14-20

What we love determines how we live. What delights us also directs us. This is what David said in Psalm 109 verse 17, “As he loved cursing, so let it come to him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him.” David was writing about his enemies. They loved cursing and they did not delight in blessing.

Well, today, what do we love? What do we delight in? You see, we reap exactly what we sow. Here are his enemies who are out sowing cursing and David knows they’re going to reap the harvest of cursing. Here they are running away from blessing, they don’t want the blessing of God. And David knows, in missing the blessing of God they’re going to miss the very joys and purposes of life.

Let’s be careful how we cultivate the appetites of our inner person. What we love we may get. And after we get it, we may regret it. What we sow, we are going to reap. Now there may be some fun in the sowing, there’s no joy in the reaping. You see, in the Christian life, our tears and our toil are in the sowing. Our joy is in the reaping. Ah, but when you live for the flesh and live for the world, the joy is in the sowing, and the trial and the tears in the reaping. You take what you want from life and you pay for it. There are no free lunches in this life. You pay for everything you get. If you want to be with those who curse God, you can do that, but you’ll reap what you sow! If you don’t want the blessing of God in your life, that’s your decision, but it may be too late when you do decide you want it.

Oh, how important it is to cultivate in our hearts spiritual appetites. To have an appetite for the Word of God, for prayer; to have an appetite to be with God’s people. To delight to worship God, to delight to serve God; whatever you love, you are going to live. Whatever you delight in will direct you. Take care that you love the things that God loves as well.
