Psalm 109:21-31
When David wrote Psalm 109 he was being sorely persecuted by his enemies. David was walking with God and they wanted to oppose him. They were cursing him, they were lying about him, they were his adversaries. He was praying for them, they were preying on him. Throughout this Psalm you find David expressing some rather vehement thoughts! He calls upon God to bring judgment upon them because this is the way they live. Again, keep in mind that David was not asking for personal revenge, David was beyond that. David was praying as God’s anointed king, concerned about the needs of his people.
I like the way Psalm 109 ends, verses 30 and 31. Listen. “I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I will praise Him among the multitude. For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul.” You see, even though he sees all of these enemies around him; even though they are persecuting the poor and the needy. Even though they love cursing and are clothed with cursing. David says, “I’m going to praise God. I’m not going to look at them and walk by sight. I’m going to walk by faith. I’m going to praise God. I will greatly praise the Lord with my mouth.” You know, praise can change the situation. Praise helps us to see better, clearer. Praise helps us to lift our hearts to the Lord when the world seems to be so difficult around us.
Secondly, David not only praised God but he witnessed. “I will praise Him among the multitude. I’m going to tell others about what God has done for me. Instead of focusing on the enemy, I’m going to go out and share the Word of God with others” (paraphrase). That’s a good way to get victory. Instead of thinking constantly about the problems in life, let’s go out and tell other about the One who solves our problems.
Thirdly, he says, “I’m going to trust my Advocate in heaven.” God is standing at our right hand. At the right hand of God is the Lord Jesus Christ, our heavenly High Priest, our Advocate who represents us in glory. Therefore, let’s not be afraid, let’s not get bitter. Let’s praise the Lord and realize that God is at our right hand and we dare not trust anyone else except Him.
