Today, we are in Psalm 110, a psalm quoted more often than any other by the New Testament writers.
So, let’s begin by reading together Psalm 110.
1 The LORD says to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter.
Rule in the midst of your enemies!
3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power,
in holy garments;
from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
4 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind,
“You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord is at your right hand;
he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses;
he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.
7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore, he will lift up his head.
The beauty of Scripture is that it all points to Jesus. It’s important to note that as we spend time in this psalm, we see that David’s Lord, Jesus, is described three ways: as king, as priest, and as warrior. That's a great combination!
He rules sovereignly.
He is our Great High Priest, and He intercedes on our behalf.
He fights for His kingdom and for us.
He does not subdue, coerce into submission, or enslave. Rather, His kindness draws us to repentance, and His people volunteer willingly to serve Him and sacrifice their own desires for His.
As shepherd leaders, let our response to this psalm be one of action. Before you move on to the next thing on your to-do list today, take a few moments to ask the Lord to search your heart. Confess and commit yourself to our Warrior-Priest-King-Shepherd afresh. Anew. Today.
Oh, fellow under-shepherds, He is worthy of it all!
May you live deeply into your calling this week.
