Psalm 110:1-17

Psalm 110:1-17

It is not polite to listen in on other people’s conversations, but in Psalm 110 we can do that. We listen to God the Father speaking to God the Son. “The LORD said unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” Psalm 110 is quoted so often in the New Testament. It talks about when our Lord Jesus Christ returned to glory and was enthroned at the right hand of the majesty on high. Now what does this say to us as we listen to God the Father speak to God the Son?

Well, first of all, it speaks of our Lord’s majesty. He has returned to heaven in all glory. He prayed, “Father, the glory that I had with you before the world began, you give it back to me” John chapter 17, and God did that. God the Father gave God the Son His majesty and now He is the king priest in heaven. Verse 4, “Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” You’ll not find anywhere in the Old Testament a priest on a throne. The only throne in the temple was the throne of grace, the mercy seat, and God was there. But here you have Jesus in His majesty, as our King and as our Priest! As our King He tells us what to do. As our Priest He gives us the strength to do it.

This also speaks of victory. He has won the battle. “Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.” How low can you get? Our Savior is victorious. He has won every battle. He is the One who is the conqueror; He is King of kings and Lord of lords. There is nothing for us to fear.

It also speaks about His ministry. He is on that throne serving us! Now with most people on thrones, others are serving them, but not so with Jesus. He is serving us.

It also speaks of our security. He ever lives to make intercession for us and as long as He lives, we live. And that’s going to be forever. Oh, how easy it is to look around and get discouraged. When the outlook is discouraging, try the uplook. And just remember God the Son is on the throne and He reigns in victory.
