Psalm 111:1-10
We live in a world that has a great deal of knowledge but not a great deal of wisdom. So called “smart people” are doing some dumb things! David tells us the secret of wisdom and understanding in Psalm 111 and verse 10. Listen, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do His commandments: His praise endures forever.”
Well, here we have three secrets of wisdom for our walk in this world. Number one, fear Him. Number two, obey Him. And number three, praise Him. Now a person doesn’t have to go through a university to learn that. Oh, it’s good to have a university education. It’s good to learn all you can learn. A friend of mine told me many years ago, when I was a teenager, “Learn everything you can learn and put it under the blood of Jesus Christ and use it for God’s glory.”
Do you want to have wisdom in daily life? Fear Him. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This is not the fear of a slave before an angry master. This is the reverence and respect of a loving child to a loving father. To show respect for God, God’s Word; to listen to it. God’s presence, to realize He is here. God’s will for our lives, fear Him.
But don’t stop there. Obey Him. “A good understanding have all they that do His commandments.” The Word of God is given to us not just to read, not just to study, but to obey. We are to be doers of the Word, and not just auditors who sit in class, take notes and we don’t have to take the exam. No, we have to obey Him. When we obey Him we understand what He is doing. Obedience is the organ of spiritual understanding.
Thirdly, praise Him. “His praise endureth forever.” Praise takes the selfishness out of our lives. Praise takes us away from idolatry, living on substitutes. As we praise Him more we want to obey Him more. And as we praise Him more we fear Him more. And the more we fear Him the more we obey Him. And the more we obey Him the more we praise Him. I think we have here the ingredients of a happy and a successful life.
