Psalms for Shepherds

Psalm 114 | Psalms for Shepherds

Listen Later

Today, we’re in Psalm 114, a song that is often paired with Psalm 113 because together the two psalms are referred to as the “The Egyptian Hallel.” As a reminder, they were traditionally sung at the beginning of the Passover meal, with Psalms 115 through 118 sung at the close of the meal.

Please join me in reading the eight verses of Psalm 114....

1 When Israel went out from Egypt,

the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,

2 Judah became his sanctuary,

    Israel his dominion.

3 The sea looked and fled;

    Jordan turned back.

4 The mountains skipped like rams,

    the hills like lambs.

5 What ails you, O sea, that you flee?

O Jordan, that you turn back?

6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?

    O hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,

at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8 who turns the rock into a pool of water,

the flint into a spring of water.

The lesson for us, fellow under-shepherd, is that God is for us! His power is greater than the most powerful of things He created. Therefore, as the sheep of His pasture, we must be in awe of our God, falling on our face before Him in awe and reverence, worshipping Him, obeying Him, following Him closely, and influencing and impacting well those He has put in our lives.

May we all do exactly that.

Take care, dear friends!
