What does it truly mean to be blessed? In this powerful exploration of Psalm 23:6, we uncover a transformative truth: real blessing isn't measured by what we possess, but by who possesses us.
The Hebrew word for "pursue" in this verse paints a striking picture – it's not a casual following but an aggressive chase, the kind used to describe armies overtaking enemies. God's goodness and unfailing love don't passively trail behind us; they actively, relentlessly pursue us through every season and circumstance of life.
Drawing from the shepherd metaphor, we discover how God uses "sheepdogs" of goodness and love to keep us moving forward when we slow down, rescue us when we wander off, and comfort us when we're afraid. Just as sheep never graduate from needing their shepherd, we never outgrow our need for God's guidance and protection.
The story of Daniel in the lions' den vividly illustrates this pursuit. Far from home in a hostile environment, Daniel experienced both God's goodness guiding his steps to prominence and God's unfailing love (chesed) rescuing him from certain death. Through every season of life, God was actively working on Daniel's behalf – not because Daniel was perfect, but because God is faithful.
Like David at Ziklag who encouraged himself by remembering God's past faithfulness, we too can find strength in recalling how God has already worked countless miracles in our lives. This perspective allows us to say with confidence that God is good all the time, even through tears, because we know who holds us securely.
Whether you're in a season of joy or struggle, God's goodness and love are pursuing you right now. Will you look beyond your circumstances to recognize the true blessing of belonging to Him?
