Do you talk to yourself? I’ve heard it said that crazy people talk to themselves. Well, that may be true, but not-crazy people do too, and I’m one of them.
King David talked to himself… many of his conversations are recorded for us in the Psalms. They can be very helpful.
Psalm 43:5 is part of one of David’s conversation with himself which gives us great insight and help.
David said to himself…
Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you in disturbed within me?
Why are you depressed? Why are you troubled and why are you growling?
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad?
Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues?
David could have responded to his first question to ‘self’ by outlining a number of problems he was facing… but he didn’t go there.
In the very next line of this verse David spoke to himself in a rebuking and directive way…
Hope in God; (Put your hope in God)
Fix my eyes on God…
This is good advice… “Fix my eyes on Him” - There needs to be a refocusing of our attention from our problems and situations to God, trusting in Him and waiting on Him – with confident expectation.
He goes on to say… For I shall yet praise Him, yes, I will praise Him again—
My Savior and my God!
When my focus changes from my problems and my moods, to my God, my internal ‘growl’ turns into ‘praise.’
For… He is “My salvation and my God.”
