Psalm 46 is recognized by many as the basis of Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God." This Psalm, as well as 47 and 48, may have been written by Hezekiah and celebrates God's victory over the enemy and because of the plural pronouns is for communal encouragement and worship. It is a song you might sing as a congregation, praising and thanking Him for His protection.
7 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,
how he has brought desolations on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
he breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the chariots with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Psalm 46:7-11
There is a wonderful life lesson in this psalm: "Peace with God is the fruit of oneness with God". Sometimes we feel God is doing nothing in our times of trouble but God is always working. May we find peace in God who is our refuge, who is our strength, who is our very help in times of trouble.
Dear shepherd leaders, take some time right now and be still from all of the distractions around you. Be still. Be quiet. Look up. Calm down. God reigns. Know that He is God and He will be exalted in the nations and exalted in the earth.
