Psalm 52: Psalms for Shepherds

Listen Later

Psalm 52 is titled, "The Steadfast Love of God Endures." This psalm is one of the eight psalms written by David when he was fleeing from Saul. This psalm specifically references Doeg, who went to Saul to accuse Ahimelech of assisting David. You can read the story in 1 Samuel chapters 21 and 22.

8 But I am like a green olive tree
in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
forever and ever.
9 I will thank you forever,
because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, for it is good,
in the presence of the godly.
Psalm 52:8-9 (ESV)

The contrast David is using is clear. He says the wicked are like uprooted trees, but the godly are like flourishing olive trees that are fruitful and beautiful. The wicked will perish and be rejected by God because of the way they live and speak and the destruction they seek. David is also saying that he and his dynasty would be safe in the house of the Lord. He vows to praise the Lord as soon as God establishes His kingdom.

We often can forget what God has done for us. The Israelites often built altars to remember what God did for them. Today, in our present day, we too, could benefit from having physical reminders of what God has done for us. Like David, may we praise God for His steadfast love and presence each day.

May you live deeply into your calling this week.
