Psalms for Shepherds

Psalm 55: Psalms for Shepherds

Listen Later

Psalm 55 is a fabulous reminder by David to give our cares to the Father. Historians and scholars believe this psalm was written early in Absalom's rebellion against his father, David. Not only had Absalom betrayed him, but so did his trusted advisor, Ahithophel.

16 But I will call on God,
and the Lord will rescue me.
17 Morning, noon, and night
I cry out in my distress,
and the Lord hears my voice.
18 He ransoms me and keeps me safe
from the battle waged against me,
though many still oppose me.
19 God, who has ruled forever,
will hear me and humble them. Interlude
For my enemies refuse to change their ways;
they do not fear God.
20 As for my companion, he betrayed his friends;
he broke his promises.
21 His words are as smooth as butter,
but in his heart is war.
His words are as soothing as lotion,
but underneath are daggers!
22 Give your burdens to the Lord,
and he will take care of you.
He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
Psalm 55:16-22 (NLT)

If you ever have felt betrayed you can empathize with David in this psalm. God knows what we need in difficult situations. He uses these times to refine and build us. And He does so in His own timing and in His way.

Dear fellow under shepherd, if you are in a time of betrayal or a difficult situation, take heart and remember our Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd will provide salve for your wound and relief for your spirit, but I encourage you to look up to Him and trust Him.

May you live deeply into your calling.
