Psalm 61 - Confidence in God’s Protection

Listen Later

Psalm, Chapter 61

Confidence in God’s Protection.

For the choir director; on a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.

61 Hear my cry, O God;
 Give heed to my prayer.

-          The title of this message is Confidence in God’s Protection

-          You can put your confidence in your own ability, bank account or friends & family but they will all fail you eventually – only trust in God works 100% of the time

-          If you want real protection, allow you trust to grow in God until you are confident in Him

-          This message was for the choir director; therefore, it was meant to be a song which would be taught, learned, memorized and sang often by the church!

o   This means we need to learn this and remember it!

-          It was also on a stringed instrument which means it was worthy to write music to go along with the words and to play the music on a string instrument (this requires effort)

o   It also means it’s praise worthy!

-          Verse 1

o   Hear my cry, O God; Give heed to my prayer

§  This implies three things

§  1st that David or the person speaking is in the form of a cry (urgent)

§  2nd the person praying is asking God to hear it

·         This means he believes in God and His ability first

·         Then he believes in His lovingkindness in that He would agree to hear the cry

§  3rd the person praying believes God will give heed to his prayer

·         To give heed means to listen with intent to do something about it

o   We must believe God is, God is able, God is willing, God hears, God cares, God will act if and when we cry out to Him in faith!

 2 From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint;
 Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

-          From the end of the earth

o   This implies that now matter where David is when he cries out to the Lord, He hears David’s small voice all the way up yonder in Heaven

-          I call to You when my heart is faint

o   Notice when David calls to the Lord

§  Only when his heart is faint!

§  Maybe he should be calling when his heart is full of joy too!

-          Lead me to the rock that is higher than I

o   A rock is solid

o   A rock is higher than the flood (present danger)

o   Jesus is also called “the Rock” and He is higher than I (each and every one of us)

o   Also note David wants to be lead to the rock

§  God hold my hand and lead me to the rock (my savior, my safety)

§  It is like asking your Dad if you can hold his hand because you are afraid
