Psalms for Shepherds

Psalm 71 | Part 2: Psalms for Shepherds

Listen Later

Today, we continue in Psalm 71 with verses 7 through 13 where the Psalmist is looking back on his life, as well as asking God not to forsake him in his old age.

7 I have been as a portent to many,
but you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
and with your glory all the day.
9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
forsake me not when my strength is spent.
10 For my enemies speak concerning me;
those who watch for my life consult together
11 and say, “God has forsaken him;
pursue and seize him,
for there is none to deliver him.”
12 O God, be not far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!
13 May my accusers be put to shame and consumed;
with scorn and disgrace may they be covered
who seek my hurt.

The Psalmist in these verses is clearly saying that he’s been able to trust God in the past and that he’s seen and experienced God’s faithfulness. Apparently, he had endured many troubles during his life, but he did not falter or deny the Lord.

There is something for us in that truth. The only way that we, as the Father’s under-shepherds, are able to remain faithful and be an example of a Godly leader to those we influence is because we have found the Good Shepherd to be our rock and the source of our strength and protection.

It is only when we lean on Him for HIS Provision, HIS protection, and HIS Presence that we can serve and sacrifice for those we lead.
