Psalm, Chapter 81

God’s Goodness and Israel’s Waywardness.

For the choir director; [a]on the Gittith. A Psalm of Asaph.

81 Sing for joy to God our strength;
 Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob.

-          The title of this message is God's goodness and Israel’s waywardness

o   God’s goodness is worth considering

o   Israel’s Waywardness is typical of man

§  Doing only what you want; refusal to obey; non-compliance

-          For the choir director (another song worth remembering & singing)

-          On the Gittith (a musical instrument played to the sound of the wine press)

-          A Psalm of Asaph (gatherer or collector)

-          God goodness in spite of Israel’s disobedience evidenced by the wine press (God’s Son crushed for their iniquities) 

-          No we get to the first verse

o   Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob

o   Notice the response to God’s Goodness in spite of Israel’s Waywardness

§  Sing for joy

§  To God our strength (because Jesus saved us)

§  Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob

·         Remember Jacob represents Israel and means “He will add”

·         God is adding the names of these people to book of eternal life in spite of their sins! – that is reason to SING and SHOUT

2 Raise a song, strike the timbrel,
 The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.
 3 Blow the trumpet at the new moon,
 At the full moon, on our feast day.

-          Raise a song, strike the timbrel

o   Make some noise; lets get the praise started!

-          The sweet sounding lyre with the harp

o   This means put music it to it; use instruments (put some effort into this)

-          Blow the trumpet at the new moon

o   This makes an announcement of God’s blessings month to month

-          At the full moon, on our feast day

o   Because God causes seeds to grow; He provides food in abundance

o   The people feast and celebrate God’s Goodness

o   We should thank God for our food and health and families too
